Baby happiness despite the corona pandemic: A new birth record is already emerging at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg / Romeo is the 1,000th birth

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is already celebrating its 1,000th birth this year. Little Romeo saw the light of day on Friday, July 2, 2021 at 9:46 am. He is 53 centimeters long and weighs 4,100 grams. This means that there will probably be at least as many births in 2021 as in previous years.

"If you look back a little, the end of the first corona lockdown was perhaps particularly celebrated by some couples," says Prof. Dr. Ingolf Juhasz-Böss, Medical Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center of Freiburg, about the current baby luck. "Compared to previous years, we have reached the 1,000 mark more quickly. There may be a new birth record at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg this year." In 2018, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology recorded 1,847 births, in 2019 there were 1,856 births and in 2020 there were 1,939 births. "We are delighted with every newborn that we have already welcomed," says Juhasz-Böss. "The team at the Women's Clinic will continue to do its best every day to provide expectant mothers with a safe and intimate birth experience."

Safe childbirth in times of pandemic

As part of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has always specialized in pregnant women who also have an infectious disease or high-risk births. "We are grateful that expectant mothers put their trust in us, even in times of corona," says Juhasz-Böss. In order to be able to care for pregnant women with suspected and confirmed COVID-19 and to virtually eliminate the risk of infection for other pregnant women, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has set up a second separate delivery room.

In the current situation, as usual, an accompanying person may be present during a natural birth in the delivery room or during a caesarean section if they are not infected with COVID-19. On the maternity wards, one of two registered accompanying persons may visit per day.
