Tumor Center Freiburg again a cancer center of excellence
Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg once again honored as an oncological center of excellence / Three million euros in funding from German Cancer Aid
The Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has once again been awarded the title of "Oncological Center of Excellence" by the German Cancer Aid. This makes the Freiburg center one of the few certified institutions of its kind in Germany for the fourth time in a row. An international panel of experts attests to the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF's very high quality in the interdisciplinary care of cancer patients and great innovative strength in the development of new therapies. German Cancer Aid supports centers of excellence in oncology in order to provide people with cancer with even better, individually tailored treatment based on the latest research. The Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF will receive three million euros over a period of four years.
"We were able to further expand the high level of patient care and research at our tumor center. This means that Freiburg continues to be one of the centers with the highest level of expertise in cancer medicine in Germany," says Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
"The Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF combines interdisciplinary care according to current medical guidelines and innovative cancer research. At the same time, it transfers innovations to other care facilities in the region," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl, spokesperson for the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF.
More than 30 institutions of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg work closely together at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF. Since 2018, the Interdisciplinary Tumor Center has been the central point of contact for tumor patients at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Oncology wards, state-of-the-art outpatient and laboratory rooms, a day clinic, consultation services and the central appointment service for tumor patients are all located here under one roof. This ensures short distances for physicians and patients. A digital registration and patient guidance system reduces waiting times to a minimum.
Physicians and scientists discuss the diagnosis and treatment of cancer patients at 24 regular conferences, known as tumor boards. At the same time, the tumor boards are a central point of contact for referring physicians. "Thanks to the close integration of treatment and research, we can often offer patients a suitable therapy at an early stage as part of clinical trials," says Prof. Dr. Justus Duyster, Medical Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF.
Research programs involving groups from the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Biology and the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics aim to shorten the path of new findings from the laboratory to the patient's bedside. In a so-called Early Clinical Trials Unit, early clinical studies are carried out to further improve tumour therapy, and in the Molecular Tumour Board, tailored, personalized therapy plans are discussed and developed on the basis of in-depth molecular diagnostics.
"Thanks to the top-class research at the Freiburg site, we are constantly succeeding in finding new starting points for effective therapies. Patients benefit from this innovative strength far beyond the region," says Prof. Dr. Christoph Peters, Scientific Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF.
"With our CCC initiative, we provided an important impetus 14 years ago to bring cancer medicine to a very high level nationwide. We are very pleased that the program and its development now also enjoy the highest international recognition," says Gerd Nettekoven, Chairman of the Board of Directors of German Cancer Aid.
