University Dermatology Clinic under new management
Expert in inflammatory skin diseases wants to further strengthen molecular diagnostics and personalized medicine
Prof. Dr. Kilian Eyerich has been Medical Director of the Department of Dermatology and Venereology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg since 1 November 2021. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Leena Bruckner-Tuderman, who has headed the clinic since 2003. Eyerich studied medicine at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and completed his doctorate. From 2014 to 2021, he held a prestigious Heisenberg Professorship of the German Research Foundation at TUM. From 2019 to 2021, he was also a professor at the Karolinska Institute, Sweden. Eyerich is particularly interested in the development and treatment of inflammatory skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and psoriasis.
"We understand the molecular causes of skin diseases better every day. This sometimes brings to light similarities between diseases that look very different. This re-sorting offers enormous potential because it allows us to test targeted treatment approaches for molecularly similar diseases," says Eyerich.
Eyerich is conducting intensive research into how immune and tissue cells influence each other in inflammatory skin diseases and how the findings can be used for precise, molecular diagnostics and improved treatment decisions.
Eyerich holds four patents, including one for a diagnostic procedure that can clearly differentiate between neurodermatitis and psoriasis at a molecular level. This enables targeted treatment based on molecular markers "Personalized medicine has a great deal of potential in dermatology, which we want to exploit in the coming years," says Eyerich. He has published more than 40 specialist publications as first or last author and is co-editor of several scientific journals.
