Artificial intelligence to improve chemotherapy management
Project led by the Medical Center - University of Freiburg receives more than 400,000 euros in funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy
Chemotherapy is often a central component in the treatment of tumor patients. With the help of artificial intelligence, the "ChemoDAT" project led by the Medical Center - University of Freiburg aims to optimize the entire process from therapy planning to aftercare for patients. The project is being funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy until mid-2023.
"Intelligent software will make important treatment information available to all those involved, provide data-based recommendations and involve patients via digital questionnaires," says Prof. Dr. Monika Engelhardt, Senior Physician and Head of the Clinical Research Section in the Department of Medicine I at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
Artificial intelligence improves communication between patients and healthcare professionals
The exchange between patients, physicians, the hospital pharmacy, laboratory and nursing staff generates a wealth of relevant information during the course of chemotherapy. However, details on therapy planning, progress monitoring and tumor documentation are often stored in different software programs. The "ChemoDAT" cooperation project aims to develop smart software that intelligently links this information and generates individualized information on dosage, medication administration and possible interactions for each patient.
Digital patient questionnaires will enable patients to report complaints and side effects quickly. The aim is to provide healthcare professionals with a quick overview of the current status of treatment and enable them to take immediate corrective action if necessary.
For the "ChemoDAT" project, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is cooperating with the companies MPS - Medizinische Planungssysteme from Freiburg and celsius37.com from Mannheim. The joint project will receive a total of 422,500 euros in funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy's Central Innovation Program for SMEs (ZIM) until mid-2023. It is part of the ZIM network "DIGInostik - Digital Diagnostics for Individualized Therapy" coordinated by the BioLAGO health cluster.
