Despite corona: tackle cancer prevention now

Detect cancer in good time: Screening examinations should definitely be carried out / World Cancer Day on February 4

Detecting and treating cancer before it becomes dangerous: That is the aim of cancer prevention. The opportunities for early cancer detection should also be used during corona. "Regular check-ups are one of the most effective tools for early cancer detection and should definitely be taken advantage of," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl, Medical Director of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF. "Unfortunately, we regularly see cases where patients have waited too long. But the earlier physicians diagnose a cancer, the faster the appropriate therapy can be started and the better the long-term outcome."

In Germany, women and men can be screened for various types of cancer as a precautionary measure. These include breast, bowel, skin, prostate and cervical cancer. The costs of the examinations are covered by health insurance, depending on age and individual disease risk. During screening examinations, physicians can detect and treat tissue changes in good time. In the case of bowel and cervical cancer, precancerous stages can even be detected - the cancer can then be treated before it develops. "Conscientious preventive appointments can reduce the risk of developing a dangerous cancer," says Fichtner-Feigl.

Individual treatment at the Oncology Center of Excellence

More than 30 institutions at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg work closely together at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF. In 2021, the Freiburg Center was awarded the title of "Oncological Center of Excellence" by German Cancer Aid for the fourth time. An international panel of experts attested to the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF's very high quality in the interdisciplinary care of cancer patients and great innovative strength in the development of new therapies.

Comprehensive measures for a safe stay

Extensive precautions are in place at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg to ensure the safety of patients. There is currently a ban on visits and mandatory testing for outpatients and accompanying medical staff. In the waiting areas, sufficient distance is ensured and FFP2 masks are mandatory. This is intended to minimize the risk of infections entering the hospital.
