Study on fall prevention: looking for more participants aged 65 and over

Falls are an enormous health risk for people over 65 / Medical Center - University of Freiburg leads nationwide study / High participant satisfaction / More participants wanted

When older people fall, it can have serious consequences, including a shortened life expectancy. Study participants aged 65 and over with at least one chronic illness are now being sought for a nationwide study on exercise therapies and fall prevention. The ENTAiER study, led by the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, has been investigating the extent to which exercise therapies, such as tai chi or eurythmy therapy, reduce the risk of falls in older people since 2019. The test subjects receive tai chi, eurythmy therapy or the usual standard care for six months. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is funding the four-year project with around two million euros for the entire research period.

"The study has been very well received everywhere. We have a high level of satisfaction among the participants and receive very positive feedback," says study director Dr. Gunver Kienle, physician at the Center for Naturopathy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "Even after the study ends, some of the groups continue to meet to continue the exercises together."

About the study

The ENTAiER study is investigating whether regular exercises from movement therapies such as tai chi or eurythmy have an impact on balance, mobility and the risk of falling. The study also analyzes how the exercises affect health-related quality of life, mood and thinking ability.

Participation in the study includes regular therapy sessions and exercise time at home. Participants are interviewed monthly by telephone and examined at an initial examination and three further on-site appointments at the study center. They should be able to come to the study center and, if necessary, to the therapy sessions independently.

Participation is always voluntary and free of charge.
