From light therapy to bedtime stories - what helps in the treatment of sleep disorders?
Participants with sleep disorders wanted for several studies at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg / Test subjects benefit from therapy carried out according to guidelines
Not being able to fall asleep or sleep through the night increases the risk of mental illness in the long term. If the symptoms persist for longer than three months and are accompanied by an impairment of daytime well-being, this is referred to as insomnia or insomnia disorder. In Germany, around six percent of the population is affected. "This can result in anxiety disorders or depressive disorders," says Prof. Dr. Dieter Riemann, head of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "This is why the clinical picture is of great interest to our working group." Current guidelines recommend cognitive behavioral therapy for the treatment of insomnia.
Study participants wanted
Several studies will now investigate the extent to which light therapy or reading bedtime stories, for example, affect the success of cognitive behavioral therapy. Participants are currently being sought for this. The prerequisite for participation in the study is the presence of an insomnia disorder according to diagnostic criteria, which will be assessed in a telephone interview. In addition, other serious mental and physical illnesses should be excluded. Some of the studies will take place in a sleep laboratory. In addition, in most studies, therapy is carried out according to guidelines from which those affected can benefit.
