Robotic surgery at market time: find out more and try it out

On November 12, 2022, interested parties can control a surgical robot themselves at the Konzerthaus Freiburg / In addition, short presentations on minimally invasive technology and time for personal discussions with experts

Whether for prostate cancer, complex abdominal procedures or gynecological operations - robotic-assisted surgery has become indispensable in many areas. The Medical Center - University of Freiburg is offering a unique opportunity to familiarize people who may be facing such a procedure with the possibilities and advantages of this technology: On Saturday, November 12, 2022, from 10 a.m.to 1 p.m., interested parties will have the opportunity to see a state-of-the-art surgical robot up close and even control it themselves at the Konzerthaus Freiburg, Konrad-Adenauer-Platz 1. There will also be short presentations from 11 a.m. and the opportunity for personal discussions with experts from the fields of urology, general and visceral surgery, thoracic surgery and gynecology. Registration is not necessary.

"With our campaign, we want to offer people the opportunity to find out more about robotic surgery, for example before or after a stroll through the city," says Prof. Dr. Christian Gratzke, Medical Director of the Department of Urology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The campaign is based on the "organ music at market time" format in Freiburg Minster.

Extensive experience brings benefits for patients

The Medical Center - University of Freiburg was the first hospital in South Baden to introduce Da-Vinci computer-assisted robotic systems around four years ago and has since established them in many specialist areas. It is now one of the largest centers for robotic surgery in Baden-Württemberg. "The system is very precise, but highly complex. I am delighted that we can use it at the University Hospital with a great deal of experience and good results," says Gratzke. Patients benefit directly from the high quality of our work. Blood loss during the operation is minimal and recovery is quick and uncomplicated in the vast majority of cases.

The Da Vinci surgical system used has a controllable video system that provides high-resolution 3D images with up to tenfold magnification. It also consists of several finely movable arms: They enable surgeons to make particularly precise incisions that are almost impossible to perform with the human hand. The camera and surgical arms are controlled by surgeons on a specially developed control console, which transfers the movements of the finger to the robotic arms.
