Bomb found on the construction site of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg

Bomb successfully defused / All associated restrictions lifted //// Precautionary transfer of patients within the University Hospital / Disposal of the unexploded bomb is planned for Saturday, January 14

The aerial bomb from the 2nd World War on a construction site of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has been defused. All closures in connection with the bomb discovery have been lifted. The return to normal operations is being coordinated step by step by the hospital operations management.

On Wednesday, January 11, 2023, an aerial bomb from the Second World War was found on a construction site of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg during an explosive ordnance probe. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Service of the state of Baden-Württemberg plans to defuse the unexploded bomb, estimated to weigh 500 kilograms, on the construction site at the corner of Lehener Straße and Löhrstraße on Saturday, January 14, 2023 . The surrounding buildings must be evacuated as a precautionary measure before the bomb is defused. The evacuation of the affected residential and commercial buildings will be coordinated by the City of Freiburg and all residents will be informed.

At the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, patients from several clinic buildings must be moved to other areas as a precautionary measure. The Department of Tumor Biology and parts of the Departments of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Ear, Nose and Throat and Pneumology as well as the Neurocenter are affected. The blood donation center, the parking garage in Breisacher Straße and other buildings along Breisacher Straße will also be closed all day.

Patient visits on Saturday are only possible in exceptional cases and only after consultation with the respective ward.

Emergency outpatients are asked to contact the surrounding hospitals in the region. Seriously injured or seriously ill patients can still be brought to the University Emergency Center via the ambulance service and treated there.

The delivery room in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will remain in operation throughout.

On Saturday, January 14, access to the University Medical Center will only be possible through the archway, Hugstetter Straße or via Sir-Hans-A.-Krebs-Straße. Access to the hospital park from Breisacher Straße will be closed.

To ensure that everything runs smoothly, patients on the affected wards will be accompanied by their treatment team to other areas of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg at an early stage. It is not necessary to transfer patients to other hospitals.
