State funds project on teacher health

The aim is to promote the vocal and mental health of teachers in the profession and to integrate this content into the training of trainee teachers

The Freiburg Institute for Musicians' Medicine (FIM) at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is receiving 640,000 euros in funding from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs for the LEHGU teacher health project, which aims to strengthen the vocal and mental health of teachers. FIM has been working intensively on the topic of teacher health on behalf of the state of Baden-Württemberg since 2011 and has developed and scientifically evaluated several successful prevention concepts in recent years. Their efficacy and sustainable effectiveness have been demonstrated in all three professional phases (studies, traineeship and profession).

"We are delighted that our commitment in this area is now being honored in the 2023/24 double budget of the Baden-Württemberg state parliament. We will continue to work to promote the vocal and mental health of teachers in the profession and to integrate this content into the training of trainee teachers," says Prof. Dr. Bernhard Richter, Head of the Freiburg Institute for Musicians' Medicine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

The LEHGU teacher health project under the umbrella of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs is led by an interdisciplinary project team at the FIM. This team currently consists of a voice therapist, a school teacher, a physician, a psychologist and a computer scientist. They work together on the development, implementation and evaluation of the LEHGU blended learning program. LEHGU is part of FIM's commitment to sustainably promoting and supporting the health of musicians and teachers. Cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs and the Center for School Quality and Teacher Training (ZSL) ensures a broader reach. The LEHGU blended learning offer contains both digital learning units and face-to-face workshops.

"We look forward to being able to offer scientifically sound methods to even more - prospective - teachers in the future and thus make an important contribution to improving the working conditions of teachers," adds Richter.
