The Science Prize 2023 and the Theodor Axenfeld Medal were awarded to Prof. Dr. Thabo Lapp

Prof. Dr. Thabo Lapp, Managing Senior Physician at the Eye Center - University of Freiburg, was awarded the Science Prize 2023 and the Theodor Axenfeld Medal of the "Friends of the University Eye Center" association at the beginning of February. He received the prize for two outstanding publications in the field of corneal transplantation. The prize is endowed with 5,000 euros.

"Corneal transplants are among the most frequently performed tissue transplants worldwide. The research work is an example of how scientific discoveries can lead to real progress for our patients," says Prof. Dr. Thomas Reinhard, Medical Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Department of Ophthalmology. Lapp's team is using RNA sequencing to investigate the influence of culture media on cells and tissue properties in human corneal tissue.

The publication entitled "Time- and Stimulus-Dependent Characteristics of Innate Immune Cells in Organ-Cultured Human Corneal Tissue" appeared in the Journal of Innate Immunity. In addition, her work "Transcriptional Profiling Provides New Insights into Organ Culture-Induced Changes in Human Donor Corneas" was published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
