TikTok channel of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg brings young people closer to health topics

The Medical Center - University of Freiburg has been awarded the International German PR Prize 2023 by the German Public Relations Association (DPRG). With "UKF goes TikTok", the Medical Center - University of Freiburg prevailed against strong international competition in the "Health and Life Science" category. The award ceremony took place on April 27, 2023 in Hanover.

Fast cuts, modern TikTok trends and complex information in under a minute: in August 2021, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg became the first university hospital in Germany to establish a TikTok channel. The videos show current health topics such as fake cannabis, endometriosis or brain doping through Ritalin as well as training opportunities at the hospital. "TikTok enables us to raise awareness of health issues among young people aged 14 to 25, close knowledge gaps and offer a counterbalance to fake news and misinformation," says Benjamin Waschow, Head of Corporate Communications at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "Our experts provide serious and reliable information that is always age- and target group-appropriate."

The TikTok channel has gained more than 194,000 likes in just nine months and over 20,000 followers in the first three months. The most successful video achieved 1.5 million views.
