Urgent appeal for blood donations
Medical Center - University of Freiburg is looking for donors with negative blood group zero
After the summer vacations, the Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is struggling with a considerable shortage of blood units. Conserves of blood group zero negative are particularly affected.
"Unfortunately, there was a dramatic drop in blood donations during the summer vacations," reports Dr. Markus Umhau, Medical Director of Blood Donation. "As a result, our reserves in the blood depot are almost exhausted." To ensure that patients at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg can continue to be reliably supplied with blood, he is asking people from Freiburg and the region to come and donate blood as soon as possible.
The depot situation is particularly dramatic for blood with a negative blood group. As almost everyone can tolerate this blood, it is particularly needed in emergencies when there is no time to determine the blood group in advance.
Blood donation: possible with or without an appointment
If possible, a blood donation should take place with an appointment. This can be arranged online at www.blutspende-uniklinik.de. Donating by appointment ensures a smooth and speedy process. Anyone who would like to donate blood spontaneously is also welcome. There may be longer waiting times for spontaneous donations.
An identity card and, if possible, a vaccination card are required for every blood donation. As the upper age limit has recently been lifted by law, all healthy people aged 18 and over are generally welcome. However, to ensure the greatest possible safety for donors and recipients, there are a few exclusion and deferral criteria. These can be found on the blood donation website.
Since October 2022, the Freiburg blood donation center is no longer located in Haus Langerhans, but at Breisacher Straße 115b - directly behind the large parking garage at the Killianstraße stop. Free parking for blood donors is available on the Tumor Biology parking deck.
