Patient advisory board with a strong voice
World Patient Safety Day on September 17 / The Medical Center - University of Freiburg has significantly strengthened the participation of patients with a recently established Patient Advisory Board at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF
"Strengthening the voice of patients" is this year's motto for World Patient Safety Day on September 17. The Medical Center - University of Freiburg shows how patients can be optimally integrated into the services and organizational processes with the newly structured Patient Advisory Board of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF. Since April 2023, cancer patients have been advising the top oncology center on numerous issues from the registration process to study planning.
"The Uniklinik Freiburg has saved my life more than once. That's why it's a great pleasure to be able to give something back with advice and support within the Patient Advisory Board," says Michael Raddatz, Chairman of the Patient Advisory Board, explaining his commitment. "At the same time, I can share my experience with other patients, hopefully allay their fears and improve their trust in therapies and patient-physician relationships."
"Patients are at the center of all our work. With the Patient Advisory Board, we can take their specific interests and needs even more into account. This helps us and, of course, especially those affected," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl, Director and Spokesperson of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
Many points of view for a common perspective
The advisory board consists of 18 people with different types of cancer, including members of regional self-help groups, as well as the patient advocate of the University Medical Center and senior representatives of the Tumor Center, self-help research, quality management, nursing care and the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center.
One of the aims of the advisory board is to better represent the interests of cancer patients, contribute to information services and introduce new ideas from a patient perspective. The Advisory Board is even involved in the conception and organization of studies and research projects. Some of the advisory board members have already been specially trained for such involvement.
Poster campaign to encourage patients
At the same time, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is raising awareness of the topic among patients and employees with a poster campaign initiated by the hospital's Governance and Quality Unit. After all, a small request from patients can often prevent major problems. The humorous posters, which are displayed throughout the hospital, are intended to draw attention to this.
