Understanding vision: Open Day at the University Eye Clinic
On Saturday, October 14, the Eye Center offers numerous information and hands-on activities on common eye diseases and exciting research / Tour of the outpatient clinic and operating theaters with live "surgery"
The Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Eye Center will be opening its doors to the public on Saturday, October 14, 2023 from 1 to 4 pm at Killianstraße 5. Under the motto "Understanding vision", the clinic will offer a comprehensive insight into the world of Eye Center in the outpatient rooms. Experts will explain topics such as glaucoma, eye surgery and inflammation as well as exciting research in ophthalmology. Visitors will also have the opportunity to watch a live cataract "operation" on a specimen in the operating theater. There will be presentations and plenty of time for individual questions in small groups. Admission is free. Registration is not necessary.
The program also includes
- Information stands: up-to-date information on common eye diseases and treatment approaches for glaucoma, cataracts, eyelid and plastic surgery, retinology, uveitis and more
- Interactive stations: Look through the microscope, "optical illusions", testing different visual aids
- Insights into research: experimental ophthalmology, functional vision research, clinical studies.
At 2 p.m., two experts will also give lectures on the topics "What helps with cataracts?" and "Effective treatment for age-related macular degeneration".
The event will also provide an opportunity to get to know the "Friends of the Eye Clinic" and the "ProRetina" self-help group for people with retinal degeneration and the self-help group for glaucoma sufferers. These organizations are committed to supporting patients and research. The mobile eye bus from Augennetz Südbaden can also be viewed in front of the clinic.
When the 'human eye animal' has problems with its eyes
"Humans are sometimes referred to as 'eye animals' because sight is so important to us. At the Open Day, we want to show visitors what great options are available today when illnesses, accidents or age-related changes make it difficult to see," says Prof. Dr. Thomas Reinhard, Medical Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's Eye Center.
