Public lectures on sudden cardiac death

To mark Heart Week, on November 21 and 22, interested parties will learn important facts about the causes, prevention and treatment options for cardiac arrhythmia in several short presentations

In Germany, around 65,000 people die of sudden cardiac death every year. Patients, relatives and interested parties can find out how this can be prevented in public lectures by the Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The events will take place on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 in the large lecture hall of the Medical Clinic, Hugstetter Straße 55 Freiburg, and on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 in the auditorium of the Bad Krozingen campus , Südring 15, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.. Participation is free of charge, registration is not required.

"The immediate cause of sudden cardiac arrest is almost always a life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia. People who notice irregularities in their heartbeat are therefore very unsettled," says Prof. Dr. Dirk Westermann, Medical Director of the Department of Cardiology and Angiology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

In the lectures, the experts from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will provide information on the causes and treatment options for cardiac arrhythmia. They will also explain the connection between the heart valves and coronary arteries and the disease.

Raising awareness with education

The events are taking place as part of this year's Heart Weeks organized by the German Heart Foundation. The aim of the campaign is to identify people at risk of sudden cardiac death at an early stage and to raise awareness among those affected by providing more information. People with pre-existing structural heart disease, in particular coronary heart disease (CHD), are considered to be at risk. In CHD, the coronary arteries, which supply the heart with oxygen- and nutrient-rich blood, are narrowed. This can lead to an insufficient supply of blood to the heart muscle. A complete blockage results in a heart attack. CHD is also caused by high-risk diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes and lipometabolic disorders. Genetics and an unhealthy lifestyle also play a role.
