For the first time, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is participating in the UN "Orange the World" campaign, which starts on November 25 / Events on November 25 and 30
In Germany, every third woman is affected by physical and/or sexualized violence at least once in her life - that is more than 12 million women. In order to draw attention to this important issue and to express solidarity with those affected, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is joining the international "Orange the World" initiative of the United Nations (UN Women) for the first time this year. It aims to combat violence against women and girls. As part of this campaign, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will fly the campaign's orange flag on the archway in Hugstetter Straße from November 25 to December 10 to set an example against gender-based violence.
"Participating in the 'Stop Violence against Women' campaign underlines the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's multifaceted commitment to protecting women and promoting gender equality," says Anja Simon, Commercial Director of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The Medical Center - University of Freiburg has long been involved in various projects and institutions that deal with the prevention of violence and support for women.
Sexualized harassment in the workplace: The Medical Center - University of Freiburg has set itself the goal of creating a safe and respectful working environment and takes a clear stance against sexual harassment and stalking and punishes violations. With the "Action plan for sexual harassment and stalking", all employees are shown options for help and provided with contact persons.
Freiburg center for women with genital mutilation: Female genital mutilation has severe physical and psychological consequences. It poses a serious health risk for affected women, especially during pregnancy and childbirth, and can lead to serious complications. At the Freiburg Center for Women with Genital Mutilation (FZG) at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, culturally sensitive physicians advise, inform and examine those affected. The FZG also provides medical care in the event of health complaints and complications. To mark the day of action, the FZG is inviting women with a history of migration to a workshop on women's health on Saturday, November 25, 2023 . From 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., experts will provide information on topics such as gynecological prevention, pregnancy and aftercare in the library at the University Women's Hospital. Interested parties and people from social and medical professions can find out how to approach, advise and care for those affected at the lecture "What should I know about female circumcision?" on Thursday, November 30, 2023 . The lecture will take place at 6 p.m. in the lecture hall at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Admission is free, registration is not necessary.
Investigation Center for Victims of Violence (USG): This facility at the Institute of Forensic Medicine offers all persons who have been victims of physical violence the possibility of forensic documentation without having to involve the police or other authorities first. Securing and documenting the consequences of physical injuries can help those affected to decide on the right course of action for them and to make a decision for or against pressing charges without time pressure. The service is free of charge for those affected and is subject to medical confidentiality.
DETECT: The project "DETECT - for discrimination-free medical training" of the Institute of General Medicine in cooperation with the Faculty of Medicine - University of Freiburg has been offering a freely accessible online platform since 2021, where those affected can anonymously share experiences of racist or sexist discrimination in medical training. The site also provides addresses of contact persons and further information on the topics. In October 2023, DETECT was awarded the Bertha Ottenstein Prize by the University of Freiburg.
