Medical Center - University of Freiburg asks blood donors for support during the Advent season / Christmas market voucher for blood donors

Christmas time is donation time. Unfortunately, this is often not the case for blood donations: waves of illness mean that blood supplies at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg are running low. One hour is enough time to help up to three people. The Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is therefore asking donors to help.

"In the midst of the pre-Christmas rush, many people unfortunately don't think about donating blood," says Prof. Dr. Richard Schäfer, Senior Physician in charge of the Institute of Transfusional Medicine and Genetherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "Yet Christmas is actually about being there for your fellow human beings. Donating blood is a great way to do something good quickly and easily. It is a gift that comes from the heart in the truest sense of the word."

Christmas thank you for donating

A sufficient volume of blood donations is particularly important during the Advent season so that the supply can be reliably maintained over the holidays. In cooperation with Badischer Winzerkeller, the blood donation center is therefore sweetening every donation with a mulled wine or punch voucher for the Freiburg Christmas market until Friday,December 22, 2023.

"Despite the shortage, safety still comes first, of course," emphasizes Schäfer. "People with a flu-like infection, i.e. a cold or sore throat, are not allowed to donate blood." If you have an infection without a fever, you can donate again one week after you have recovered. Anyone who has had a body temperature of more than 38.5 degrees must wait four weeks before donating blood again.

Generally, healthy people aged 18 and over may donate. The upper age limit was lifted in October. The physicians at the blood donation center now check individually whether the blood donation is still well tolerated.

If you would like to help twice over, you can also be registered in the Freiburg stem cell database when you donate blood. On request, a small amount of blood can also be taken for typing during the donation.

Opening hours of the blood donation center:
Monday and Tuesday | 8 am to 3 pm
Wednesday and Thursday | 12 pm to 7 pm
Friday and Saturday | 8 am to 1 pm
The blood donationcenter is closed on public holidays. Otherwise the regular opening hours apply.
