Detect cancer early

World Cancer Day on February 4 / Screening can save lives

Prostate cancer and breast cancer are the most common gender-specific tumor diseases. The likelihood of developing these cancers increases with age. However, thanks to innovative treatment methods, the chances of recovery are good. Especially if the disease is detected in good time: "The earlier a cancer is detected, the sooner we can start the appropriate treatment. That's why it's important to take advantage of screening examinations," says Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl, Medical Director of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg and Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF.

Staying ahead of cancer

Over 65,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Germany every year. If the tumor is detected early, it can be successfully treated in most cases. Markus Schneider* was also diagnosed with prostate cancer during a screening. Thanks to the early diagnosis, treatment at the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg under the direction of Prof. Dr. Anca-L. Grosu was initiated in good time. Schneider is now symptom-free and advises patients to take advantage of the preventive care services: "After the diagnosis, I was naturally anxious, but I was shown ways to move forward. I now live as carefree as before and I appeal to everyone to go for check-ups."

Innovative treatment

Schneider also owes his recovery to the advanced treatment he received as part of a recent study. The nationwide HypoFocal-SBRT study, led by the Department of Radiation Oncology, is currently researching a new treatment method for prostate cancer. The tumor tissue is irradiated in a more targeted manner, for a shorter time and with a higher dose. The aim is to spare adjacent healthy tissue. While most patients receive radiation treatment of the entire prostate over several weeks, Schneider was discharged after just five days of treatment.
