Pediatric anesthesia in the underwater world

Medical Center - University of Freiburg unveils imaginatively redesigned anesthesia rooms in the pediatric surgery department / Underwater paradise created through creative partnership with Europa-Park in Rust

At the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, the anaesthesia rooms in the pediatric surgery department have been transformed into an impressive underwater world. In a design partnership, Europa-Park financed this redesign as a sponsor. The creative motifs, inspired by the water adventure world Rulantica, aim to create a calming environment for the young patients. The redesign was officially inaugurated on February 27, 2024, with the mascots Snorri and Ed Euromaus exploring the rooms together with Miriam Mack, owner family Europa-Park.

"The colorful and lively environment has a very positive effect on the mood of our young patients. They are immersed in a world full of fantasy, which helps them to go into the anaesthetic calmly and relaxed and then wake up again gently," says Prof. Dr. Hartmut Bürkle, Medical Director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. He congratulates the pediatric anesthesia team Natascha Schillinger and PD Dr. Johannes Spaeth on this great initiative and would like to thank Miriam Mack for sponsoring the project. The creative team from Europa-Park created the motifs in consultation with a child psychologist from the hospital to ensure that the images evoke positive emotions.

A dive into healing

"We wanted to create a world where children feel distracted and safe. We awaken the imagination of visitors every day at Europa-Park, and we have used this ability to bring an atmosphere of wonder and joy here at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg," says Miriam Mack, Social and Cultural Affairs and Head of Corporate Health Mack Group.

The walls of the anaesthesia and recovery room are now animated with scenes taken from a colorful coral landscape. From Snorri the Sixtopus, playfully blowing bubbles into the crystal-clear water with a pirate hat, to shoals of fish frolicking happily around - the wonderful illustrations have already become indispensable following initial positive reports from the children undergoing treatment. The cheerful motifs were designed by the two artists Anna Hüllner and Marion Touchemoulin.
