New midwife delivery room at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg

Start of project to set up a midwife-led delivery room / care by midwives to promote natural birth / start at the beginning of 2025

A natural birth in hospital, where pregnant women are cared for exclusively by midwives - this will be possible at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg in the future. The so-called midwife-led delivery room is intended to create an additional option for women who expect a problem-free birth but want to give birth in the safe environment of a hospital. A project team made up of midwives and gynaecologists has started work at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg with the aim of offering midwife-led births from the beginning of 2025. The project is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Social Affairs, Health and Integration.

Attractive workplace for midwives

"Not only families will benefit from the new concept, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will also become an even more attractive employer for midwives," says Professor Dr. Ingolf Juhasz-Böss, Medical Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. This is because independent care during childbirth gives midwives the opportunity to fully develop their professional skills and provide more intensive personal care for pregnant women and women in labor.

In addition, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg offers its midwives continuous advanced training and development opportunities. This keeps them up to date and enables them to continually refine their skills, while pregnant women benefit from highly qualified care.

Natural birth with safety

The concept of the midwife-led delivery room is already established in other countries. "According to studies, women there report even more positive birth experiences," says midwife Carolina Fink from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Together with her colleague Tahira Khan, she is leading the project team introducing the midwife-led delivery room.

"We have to understand birth as a natural process," says Fink. "According to studies, midwife-led delivery rooms result in more vaginal births, less use of painkillers and more mobility for women giving birth, as intensive care is provided during childbirth." The birth is attended exclusively by a midwife. However, in the event of complications, interdisciplinary care in close cooperation with the gynecology team is possible at any time.

The first women are expected to be accepted in the midwife delivery room at the beginning of 2025. Anyone interested in giving birth in the midwife delivery room can find out more during consultation hours.
