Virus researcher receives first Klaus Mangold Prize

Molecular biologist Dr. Jonas Fuchs from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg receives the newly established Klaus Mangold Prize for his research on virus evolution

How do viruses change in patients who have been infected for a long period of time and what role does this play in treatment? Dr. Jonas Fuchs, a researcher at the Institute for Virology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, is investigating these questions. In mid-April, the young scientist was honored with the first Klaus Mangold Prize of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "Dr. Fuchs was able to successfully transfer new findings from molecular virology to patient care. His research provides insights into the viral evolution of SARS-CoV-2 and hepatitis E and helps in the development of personalized therapies," says Prof. Dr. Hartmut Hengel, Head of the Institute for Virology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.

The Klaus Mangold Prize honors outstanding projects that improve patient care and is awarded to employees of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. The prize is endowed with 2,000 euros. It was named after Prof. Dr. Klaus Mangold, who was a member of the Supervisory Board of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg between 1998 and 2011 as a representative of the business community.
