Due to low stocks and the upcoming Whitsun vacations, blood donors are urgently needed - daily raffle of swimming pool vouchers as a thank you

The Blood Donation Center of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is asking people in and around Freiburg to come and donate blood. Due to the upcoming Whitsun vacations, the already tight nationwide depot situation could become even tighter over the next few weeks. As a small incentive, the blood donation center is giving away five vouchers for Freiburg's swimming pools every day until the end of May.

"We generally notice a slight decline in the number of donations during vacation periods," reports Prof. Dr. Richard Schäfer, Head of Transfusion Medicine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. This is exacerbated by the fact that dengue virus infections can occur in some popular vacation destinations. In order to provide the greatest possible protection for blood recipients, people who have spent their vacation there must wait four weeks until their next blood donation. In addition to long-distance destinations, regions in the south of France and Spain as well as major cities such as Barcelona, Paris and Rome are also affected. People who would like to donate blood after a trip to possible risk areas can contact the blood donation center directly for individual clarification.

"We ask all healthy people over the age of 18 to come and donate blood before the travel period," says Schäfer. We are particularly looking for blood donors with blood group zero and all blood groups with the rhesus factor "negative".

Mini vacation at the swimming pool as a thank you

As a small thank you for the commitment of blood donors, the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is giving away five Regio Bäder vouchers every day until the end of May. These vouchers give you free entry to one of Freiburg's eight indoor and outdoor swimming pools. "This means that all blood donors can enjoy a mini vacation, whether it's in the outdoor pool in good weather or in the indoor pool in bad weather," says Schäfer.

Generally speaking, healthy people aged 18 and over can donate. There is no longer an upper age limit. The donor doctors now individually check the compatibility of a blood donation. Detailed information and a direct contact option can be found at www.blutspende-uniklinik.de

Opening hours of the blood donation center:

• Monday and Tuesday | 8 am to 3 pm
• Wednesday and Thursday | 12 to 7 p.m.
• Friday and Saturday | 8 am to 1 pm

The blood donation center is closed on public holidays. Otherwise the regular opening hours apply.
