Tumor Center Freiburg remains a Cancer Center of Excellence

Renewed funding for the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg / 3.8 million euros from German Cancer Aid / Cancer Center celebrates its 45th anniversary

The Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg has once again been awarded the title of "Oncological Center of Excellence" by the German Cancer Aid. This was announced by the foundation on July 9, 2024. This makes the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF one of the few institutions in Germany to be recognized as a leading cancer center for the fifth time. The funding of 3.8 million euros over four years enables the center to continue its outstanding work in patient care and cancer research and to continuously develop it further, as it has done since its foundation 45 years ago.

"The renewed funding is both an award and an incentive to offer our patients quality-centered university cancer medicine at all times and to continuously improve it through innovative research," says Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "At the same time, care for the region can only be provided in a team with surrounding hospitals and specialist practices. We see ourselves as a central point of contact and coordinator. This coordination already works very well for us in South Baden and will be expanded even further," says Wenz.

Progress through collaboration and innovation

"We offer our cancer patients individual and interdisciplinary treatment with the latest therapy concepts. Through studies, they can benefit directly from new diagnostic and treatment approaches," explains Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl, Director and Spokesperson of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "With the 45th anniversary of the Tumor Center, we stand for consistently high quality in cancer diagnostics and therapy."

37 different clinics, institutes and facilities of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg work closely together at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF. Regular conferences, known as tumor boards, are at the heart of the center. Here, physicians and scientists work closely together to find the best possible diagnostics and therapy planning. The tumor boards are also an important point of contact for referring physicians. In total, there are 28 different tumor boards for different types of cancer at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF.

"All patients who are treated for a tumor at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg benefit from the very high quality of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF, regardless of the place of treatment or the type of tumor," says Prof. Dr. Justus Duyster, Medical Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF. The "Interdisciplinary Tumor Center" building, which opened in 2018, is a visible sign to the outside world. It houses a large outpatient clinic and day clinic for drug therapy and is also where the tumor boards take place.

Numerous research programs promote the rapid transfer of new findings from the laboratory to the patient's bedside. "Thanks to the outstanding research at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF, we are constantly succeeding in developing new therapeutic approaches that benefit patients worldwide," says Prof. Dr. Christoph Peters, Scientific Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF.

In addition to cutting-edge medical care, holistic care at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF also includes many important support services, from cancer prevention to psychological aftercare.

A patient advisory board accompanies and advises the Tumor Center on organizational issues. It is also consulted on study issues and innovations. "I am impressed by how the Tumor Center is constantly striving for improvement at all levels," explains Michael Raddatz, Chairman of the Patient Advisory Board. "As the Patient Advisory Board, we are in constant communication with the physicians and staff at the center and would like to contribute to making care even better and clearer."
