Medical Center - University of Freiburg relies on Telekom and Google Cloud for advanced digital solutions
Telekom and Google Cloud increase quality of care and relieve staff at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg

The Medical Center - University of Freiburg is integrating a highly secure and powerful cloud solution as part of its digitalization strategy. The data is hosted in the T-Systems Sovereign Cloud powered by Google Cloud. T-Systems, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom, is responsible for managing the services and ensuring data sovereignty. The aim is to improve the quality of care and relieve the burden on medical staff.
"With this partnership, we are setting an important milestone in the digitalization of our clinic. The high security and performance of the cloud solution enables us to drive patient-oriented innovations faster and thus increase the quality of care," emphasizes Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
High data protection and data security standards in the Sovereign Cloud
"We are thus laying the foundation for innovative care and can, for example, evaluate genomic use cases more quickly and scale them better. We also plan to use Gemini to make the content of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg's website more accessible," says Dr. Lennart Jahnke, Chief Digital Officer (CDO) of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
Dr. Gottfried Ludewig, Managing Director of Telekom Healthcare Solutions, explains the pioneering cooperation: "We are delighted to support the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, the second university hospital in Germany, on its path to digitalization with a highly secure and very powerful solution that is particularly important when dealing with sensitive patient data. Our customers benefit from state-of-the-art technology while retaining full sovereignty over their data."
The T-Systems Sovereign Cloud powered by Google Cloud meets the strict German requirements for data protection, data residency and security. This cloud solution restricts data processing to specific geographical regions and ensures that all data is encrypted using keys administered by T-Systems in its data centers.
The collaboration also serves as a model for the planned cloud platform MEDI:CUS of the state of Baden-Württemberg to process healthcare data securely, efficiently and in compliance with data protection regulations in the cloud. The long-term cooperation is based on a memorandum of understanding and aims to drive forward technical innovations and make them usable in everyday clinical practice.
"The Medical Center - University of Freiburg is setting new standards in digital healthcare. With the T-Systems Sovereign Cloud powered by Google Cloud, we are jointly creating an environment in which innovation is created for the benefit of patients," explains Dr. Wieland Holfelder, Vice President Engineering, Regional CTO Google Cloud Security & Site Lead of the Google Engineering Center Munich.
