Support for the very youngest

On Sunday, November 17, the new Center for Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg will host an action day to mark World Premature Infants' Day / Play offers for children and interested parents

Under the motto "Premature babies - We are here for you!", the Medical Center - University of Freiburg invites you to this year's World Premature Baby Day on Sunday, November 17 . From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Department of General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine and Neonatology in the new Freiburg Center for Pediatrics and Neonatology will be offering information on premature babies, insights into the work of a neonatology unit, space for discussions and, above all, lots of fun activities for former premature babies as well as all other children and parents. The day of action is supported by the Frühchenverein Freiburg e. V., among others. Admission is free and registration is not required.

On this day, visitors will be able to see a real premature baby bed (incubator) with all the medical equipment on a neonatal intensive care unit up close. For the first time, it will be possible to visit the neonatal intensive care unit virtually. Children can also have their cuddly toys cared for in a small version of the popular Teddy Bear Hospital run by the Open Medical Student Association Freiburg. There will be a play course on the topic of premature babies as well as an information stand of the initiative "Echte Helden - Für unsere Center for Pediatrics Freiburg e. V.". Numerous experts will also be available for questions and discussions. Coffee, tea, cold drinks and freshly baked waffles will be available.

"This day aims to raise awareness of the special challenges and needs of premature babies and their families. Our aim is to provide an insight into our highly specialized work. Premature babies need excellent medical care, while their families need emotional support on their often difficult journey into life," says Prof. Dr. Hans Fuchs, Medical Director of Neonatology in the Department of General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine and Neonatology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "Our newly opened neonatology department offers the best conditions for this, as parents can now stay with their children from the beginning to the end of their stay and be even better involved in their children's therapy."

Specialized treatment centre

In Germany, more than 60,000 children are born prematurely every year. This means that every tenth child is born before the 37th week of pregnancy. Depending on how many weeks prematurely it is born, a premature baby can only breathe, drink and maintain its body temperature to a limited extent or not at all. It must therefore be given intensive medical care as quickly as possible and receive the necessary care in an incubator.

The Section of Neonatology and Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine of the Department of General Pediatrics and Gynecology and the Department of Obstetrics and Perinatology of the Department - University of Freiburg are certified as a Level I Perinatal Center and are therefore a specialized treatment center for extremely premature babies. The new neonatal intensive care unit S4 with 20 beds is located in the new Center for Pediatrics in Freiburg and is connected to the delivery room, the maternity ward and the maternity ward. Almost all beds also have rooming-in facilities for parents. Over 500 newborns were treated there last year.
