Medical Center - University of Freiburg asks blood donors for support during the Advent season / Christmas market voucher for blood donors
For many, the Advent season is a time of giving. However, there are often shortages in blood donations during this time, as waves of illness affect the volume of donations. This makes every single donation all the more important. The Blood Donation Center at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg is calling on healthy people aged 18 and over to donate blood. As a thank you, donors will receive a mulled wine or punch voucher for the Freiburg Christmas market until Monday, December 23, 2024.
"Donating blood during Advent is more than just a good intention - it saves lives," says Prof. Dr. Richard Schäfer, Senior Physician at the Institute of Transfusional Medicine and Genetherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. "In just one hour, you can help up to three people and give them a very special gift."
Christmas thank you
A sufficient volume of blood donations is particularly important during the Christmas period so that the supply can be reliably maintained over the holidays. In cooperation with Badischer Winzerkeller, the blood donation center is therefore sweetening every donation with a mulled wine or punch voucher for the Freiburg Christmas market until Monday, December 23, 2024.
"Despite the shortage, safety still comes first, of course," emphasizes Schäfer. "People with a flu-like infection, i.e. a cold or sore throat, are not allowed to donate blood." If you have an infection without a fever, you can donate again one week after you have recovered. Anyone who has had a body temperature of more than 38.5 degrees must wait four weeks before donating blood again. Generally, healthy people aged 18 and over may donate. There is no longer an upper age limit.
If you would like to help twice over, you can also be registered in the Freiburg stem cell database when you donate blood. On request, a small amount of blood can also be taken for typing during the donation.

Monday and Tuesday | 8 am to 3 pm
Wednesday and Thursday | 12 pm to 7 pm
Friday and Saturday | 8 am to 1 pm
The blood donation center is closed on December 24 and 31 and on public holidays.
