Digital medicine: Baden-Württemberg clinics network with new infrastructure
PC3-AIDA project enables university hospitals to exchange extensive knowledge and data with the help of artificial intelligence

The first cornerstone of a vision for the future: a new data infrastructure is being established at the Uniklinik Freiburg, Tübingen and Ulm hospitals in Baden-Württemberg and the University Medical Center Mannheim to network all project sites. The new structure enables the uncomplicated and secure exchange of patient data, especially radiological imaging, between the project sites in real time and provides a rich pool of knowledge and information for all participants. On Tuesday, December 10, 2024, the first high-resolution photon counting CT data set was successfully transferred and evaluated between two sites, thus preparing the new structure for operation. In everyday clinical practice, the data exchange platform will facilitate numerous processes for clinical staff and patients and create the basis for further services such as appointment management or medical support systems.
"This is a big step for Baden-Württemberg, but above all for our many patients, as we can now not only send simple radiological image data back and forth, but also integrate other medical information such as laboratory values and, above all, further increase the value of the image data for treatment with AI analyses in the system," says Prof. Dr. Fabian Bamberg, Medical Director of the Department of Radiology and Interventional Radiology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg.
Multifunctional data infrastructure for secure exchange
In the predecessor project to PC3-AIDA - the PC3 project - innovative computed tomography scanners with "photon counting" computed tomography technology (PC-CT) were established at all participating clinics. The PC3-AIDA project has now reached a new milestone: the multifunctional data infrastructuretdhp - short for "teamplay digital health platform connect" - will digitally network the University Hospitals of Freiburg, Tübingen and Ulm as well as the University Medical Center Mannheim. This will enable the clinics to exchange patient data and knowledge with each other and access a rich pool of information for further AI-supported analyses. On December 10, 2024, the first PC-CT data set was officially exchanged between the clinical sites in Freiburg and Mannheim via the newly implemented tdhp data infrastructure. In the further course of the project, with the support of the state agency BIOPRO Baden-Württemberg, Stuttgart, the potential of tdhp and the connected value-added software services is to be demonstrated, thus laying the foundation for the further processing of highly complex health data with increased benefits for patients combined with added value in the state's digital healthcare industry. This includes AI-supported software services that facilitate, for example, the in-depth analysis of image data and the creation of doctor's letters or optimize internal laboratory processes.
