Test subjects wanted for muscular relaxation test

A new study by the University Medical Center Freiburg is investigating the physiological basis of relaxation / Participants can register now

Stress can trigger numerous diseases such as high blood pressure or depression. In order to better understand the complex phenomenon of "stress", the University Center for Naturopathy at the Department of Internal Medicine II at the Freiburg University Medical Center is launching a new study on the body's ability to relax. The focus is on a manual muscle test in which brain waves and muscle activity are measured during passive movement of the wrist, elbow and shoulder joints. The aim is to scientifically record the interplay between subjectively perceived and objectively measured relaxation.

"Today, relaxation is not only seen as an antidote to stress, but also plays a therapeutically recognized role, for example in anxiety disorders or chronic pain," says Prof. Dr. Roman Huber, Head of the University Center for Naturopathy at the Freiburg University Medical Center. "With our study, we want to investigate how muscular relaxation can be objectively recorded and to what extent a muscle test we have developed can provide reliable information about it."

Study procedure and requirements

The study is aimed at healthy adults aged 18 and over with either a very good or very limited ability to relax their muscles. This is checked in a screening appointment by means of a movement test on the arm. Unfortunately, people with health restrictions such as pain or paralysis cannot take part.

After a preliminary telephone consultation and the screening appointment, the main examination takes place in the EEG laboratory at the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. There, electrodes are attached to record brain and muscle activity. In addition, standardized questionnaires are completed for subjective stress assessment. The passive muscle test is then carried out under supervision. Participants receive an expense allowance of 50 euros for full participation.
