The University Medical Center Freiburg honors outstanding commitment in nursing for the 20th time

Exceptional nursing care combines high professional competence with humanity - it is precisely this commitment that the University Medical Center Freiburg honours with the PflegeStar. In July, healthcare and pediatric nurse Iris Danberg was honored with the 20th PflegeStar for her special commitment.

"Nursing means much more than just providing care - it means care, responsibility and daily commitment to the well-being of our patients," says Stefanie Bieberstein, Deputy Director of Nursing at the University Medical Center Freiburg. "With the PflegeStar, we want to show how important and valuable the personal work of each individual in nursing is."

Moving stories from everyday nursing care

Danberg is a paediatric nurse at the Department of Gynaecology and supports families after miscarriages or stillbirths as a bereavement counsellor, creating a safe environment through her professional expertise and empathy. In addition to her, two other nurses were also honored: "In my worst moments, she was my light," wrote a patient about Sandra Audehm, a nurse in the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Freiburg University Medical Center. She is recognized for her empathic, clear and competent manner in difficult situations. In the day clinic of the Clinic for Internal Medicine I, Petra Demel impresses with her calm charisma, patience and sensitivity - even under high pressure, she takes time for the individual needs of her patients. "All three honorees show every day what good nursing care is all about - they absolutely deserve the PflegeStar," says Bieberstein.

Nomination by patients, relatives and employees

The PflegeStar was initiated in 2020 to mark the World Health Organization's (WHO) Year of Nurses and Midwives. Since then, it has been used to recognize excellent professional practice at the University Medical Center Freiburg as part of the Magnet4Europe program. Anyone can nominate a person for the award - in particular patients and their relatives as well as colleagues and employees from all areas. A committee of employees from the University Medical Center Freiburg selects the award-winning nurses and midwives from the submitted testimonials.
