Cutting-edge digital medicine with international certification

International assessment confirms that the Medical Center – University of Freiburg has a high level of digital maturity and provides tangible benefits for patients

In January 2026, the Medical Center – University of Freiburg received important validation of its digitalization strategy: The international Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) recognized the hospital’s high level of digitalization by international standards. This recognition is based on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM), in which the Medical Center – University of Freiburg achieved Level 4. For patients, this means clearly structured treatment processes, reliable digital documentation, and good access to relevant health information. As early as 2025, the Federal Ministry of Health had confirmed in the DigitalRadar that the Medical Center – University of Freiburg ranks among the top one percent of hospitals nationwide in terms of digitalization.

“This award shows that digitalization has become fully integrated into our daily hospital routine,” says Dr. Lennart Jahnke, Chief Information Officer at the Center for Digitalization and Information Technology at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg. “It reduces the workload on staff, increases safety, and improves the quality of care—all at an internationally recognized level.”

Digital Support for Care and Collaboration

The EMRAM model assesses a hospital’s digital maturity based on clearly defined criteria on a scale from 0 to 7. Level 4 signifies structured, digital medical documentation and the widespread use of electronic orders in daily clinical practice.

The award is based on digital applications that are already in routine use at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg. Patients can securely access test results, appointments, and documents via the “Meine Uniklinik” app. Medical documentation is handled electronically and supported by voice-controlled software with artificial intelligence—this streamlines processes and reduces potential sources of error. The protection of sensitive data is also a high priority: investments in modern IT security structures and regular simulations strengthen resilience against cyberattacks.

High usage of digital systems

The hospital achieved particularly high scores regarding the actual use of digital systems by medical staff: in this area, Freiburg reached 87 percent of the maximum score. The Medical Center – University of Freiburg also already meets requirements for the secure exchange of health data with other institutions that go beyond the current EMRAM level.

“The assessment shows that we have gradually embedded digitalization into our daily clinical practice. It gives us the momentum to further expand digital solutions and integrate processes for patients and staff even more effectively,” saysProf. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.
