25 million euros for the Digital Innovation Center at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg
State Funding / With the launch of DIGIZ, a new type of innovation and translation center is being established at the intersection of medical technology, digitalization, and clinical patient care
The Medical Center – University of Freiburg is receiving 25 million euros to establish a diagnostic and therapeutic research and development unit at the Digital Innovation Center (DIGIZ). The funding was approved on February 10 by the cabinet of the Baden-Württemberg state government upon the recommendation of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism.
“The DIGIZ makes it possible to systematically combine clinical excellence, modern medical technology, and data-driven innovations with AI. In doing so, we are creating sustainable added value for patients as well as for Baden-Württemberg as a hub for healthcare and business,” says Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Officer of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.
With DIGIZ, a nationwide unique innovation and translation center is being established in Freiburg at the intersection of medical technology, digitalization, and clinical patient care. Innovations—particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, modern imaging, and data-driven precision medicine—are to be systematically and rapidly translated into medical practice. The funding enables investments in state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging, high-performance IT infrastructure, and qualified specialist staff.
“The intensive, nearly year-long collaboration with the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs demonstrates the high level of trust in the Medical Center – University of Freiburg and in the potential of our approach,” Wenz continued.
At DIGIZ, science, clinical care, and industry are closely integrated. The new research infrastructure is designed to specifically attract startups and international medical technology companies to jointly develop innovative therapies and marketable products.
“DIGIZ strengthens Baden-Württemberg’s position as a leading hub for digital health innovations. It combines excellent clinical research with industrial development, thereby accelerating the transfer of innovations into clinical care and the market,” said Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism for Baden-Württemberg.
The center builds on existing initiatives funded by the state, including the PC3 and PC3-AIDA projects as well as the MEDI:CUS medical data infrastructure. The goal is to consistently advance digital networking and the AI-supported use of modern imaging.
Construction of the funded research and development unit will begin later this year. DIGIZ is scheduled to become operational in 2030.
