Neurovascular Center at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg Recognized / Excellent Care for Complex Vascular Diseases / Support for Clinics in the Region

With strokes, every minute counts. The Neurocenter at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg offers specialized facilities for treating these emergencies: As of January 1, 2026, the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, and Integration has officially recognized the Neurocenter as a Neurovascular Center. This designation is awarded to hospitals that meet the quality standards set by the Joint Federal Committee (G-BA) for the care of complex vascular diseases of the brain. For patients, this means verified treatment quality and clearly coordinated procedures for particularly complex neurovascular emergencies.

“Across Germany, only a few clinics have met these high standards so far,” says Prof. Dr. Heinz Wiendl, Medical Director of the Department of Neurology and Neuroscience and spokesperson for the Neurocenter at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg. “The recognition as a Neurovascular Center confirms that we can treat complex vascular diseases of the brain at the highest level around the clock.”

Interdisciplinary Treatment of Complex Vascular Diseases

As a Neurovascular Center, the Neurocenter at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg treats a wide range of diseases of the brain’s blood vessels. These include so-called ischemic strokes caused by vascular occlusions, cerebral hemorrhages, and complex vascular malformations. Experts from the departments of neurology, neuroradiology, neurosurgery, and intensive care medicine work closely together and continuously coordinate diagnostics and therapy.

In addition, experts from the Medical Center – University of Freiburg support clinics in the region via telemedicine networks. Image data and findings can be transmitted directly to Freiburg, where specialists evaluate them and advise the treating teams on site. “This allows us to make our expertise available to other clinics and enable patients to receive prompt access to appropriate treatment,” says Wiendl.
