Ten Years of Cancer Counseling at Emmendingen District Hospital
Monthly psychosocial support for cancer patients in the Emmendingen district / Offered by the Freiburg Cancer Counseling Center since 2016 / Discussion, information, and personal counseling
For the past ten years, the Freiburg Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center has been offering monthly counseling sessions for people affected by cancer at the Emmendingen District Hospital. The program is aimed at patients and their families in the Emmendingen district and is designed to facilitate access to psychosocial support. The sessions cover topics such as coping personally with a cancer diagnosis, managing anxiety, and social welfare issues.
“We are very pleased that this service has been available in Emmendingen for ten years and has been so well received,” says Cornelia Schulz, director of the Freiburg Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center. “The demand shows us how important local psychosocial support is for people with cancer and their families. Many patients appreciate the opportunity to ask questions and share experiences.”
Counseling for Patients and Family Members
The Freiburg Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center supports outpatient cancer patients and their families from diagnosis through treatment and into the time afterward. The goal of the counseling is to reduce stress and provide guidance in daily life with the disease. Staff members provide information on social welfare issues, financial assistance, and rehabilitation options, and support those affected in developing new structures in family and daily life.
Families with children can also take advantage of the “Tigerherz – When Parents Have Cancer” program at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg. The program is designed for families in which a parent has cancer and specifically supports affected parents in helping their children cope with the illness.
Once a month, the Cancer Counseling Center holds an informational event at the Emmendingen District Hospital. Following a presentation lasting about an hour, there is an opportunity for questions, discussion, and personal counseling. In addition, the counseling center organizes group sessions and workshops. All counseling sessions are confidential, free of charge, and can take place in person, by phone, or via video.
