Digital tools make it easier to decide whether to participate in cancer studies
New web-based application from the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg helps patients decide whether to participate in early-phase clinical trials
Patients with cancer can now use a digital decision-making tool at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg to learn about early-phase clinical trials. The web-based application is designed to help them work with their treating physicians to make an informed decision about potential participation in a trial. The tool was developed as part of the ONCOnnect collaborative project, funded by German Cancer Aid, in cooperation with Aachen University Hospital. ONCOnnect is a national collaborative project that aims to ensure comprehensive and optimal care for cancer patients across Germany by networking and harmonizing leading oncology centers.
“The digital decision-making tool serves as a guide for participation in clinical trials. The information provided is neither stored nor shared,” says PD Dr. Elisabeth Schorb, Director and Spokesperson of the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF.
Information on the process and specifics of clinical trials
Clinical trials test whether new treatments are effective and safe. Participants can gain early access to new therapies and receive close monitoring from medical professionals. Strict legal requirements are in place to ensure the safety of participants. Additionally, a competent authority and an ethics committee review all details.
This decision-making guide is intended for patients, family members, and other interested parties. It provides information about clinical trials for cancer, explains the specifics of early trial phases, and guides users step-by-step through the topic. The goal is to offer initial guidance and support preparation for the consultation with the doctor.
