The German Cancer Society honors the Sarcoma Center at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg – CCCF of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg

The Sarcoma Center at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg has been certified by the German Cancer Society as a sarcoma center for soft tissue sarcomas since March 2026. This means the center meets high standards for diagnostics, treatment, and interdisciplinary collaboration. For patients with these rare malignant tumors, this ensures treatment according to clear quality standards at a specialized center.

“The certification demonstrates that we in Freiburg have established and further developed reliable structures for the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas in a short period of time,” says Prof. Dr. David Braig, Director of the Sarcoma Center and Senior Consultant at the Department of Plastic Surgery. “The fact that we meet the requirements is the result of close collaboration among many participating departments,” adds PD Dr. Sophia Chikhladze, Center Coordinator and Executive Senior Physician at the Department of General and Visceral Surgery.

Treatment through close coordination across multiple specialties

Soft tissue sarcomas are rare malignant tumors. Their treatment is complex and requires close collaboration among various specialties. At the Freiburg Sarcoma Center, therefore, all patients are discussed in an interdisciplinary tumor board. The goal of certification is to measurably ensure the quality and specialization of care.

The center focuses on soft tissue sarcomas of the arms and legs as well as tumors in the abdominal cavity. Through close collaboration between surgical and radiation oncology departments, the affected limb can often be preserved and reconstructed at the same time, even in cases of complex tumors. Additionally, procedures such as intraoperative radiation therapy are available, which is used in particular for tumors located in close proximity to sensitive structures such as blood vessels or nerves.
