Strong Families Despite Cancer

May 15 is International Day of Families / Tigerherz supports children of parents with cancer during difficult times / “Loni’s Space Journey” offers virtual support

International Family Day on May 15 highlights the importance of family cohesion every year. For many families, this cohesion is put to the test when a serious illness like cancer suddenly changes their lives. Children and adolescents, in particular, often find a parent’s illness to be a heavy burden. The “Tigerherz … when parents have cancer” program at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg supports families in which a father or mother has been diagnosed with cancer. The goal is to strengthen the entire family—with a special focus on the needs of the children.

“It is important to us to relieve the burden on families early on and provide children with a safe space. We also want to conduct scientific research to determine which services truly help parents and children,” says Dr. Stefanie Pietsch, a social pedagogue and research associate at the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg - CCCF at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.

A central issue here is how parents with cancer can inform their children about the disease. The web app “Loni’s Space Journey” was developed for this purpose. It conveys information about cancer and treatments in a child-friendly way. Professors and students at Augsburg University of Applied Sciences designed, developed, and scientifically evaluated the application in collaboration with Tigerherz … wenn Eltern Krebs haben.

Support for Children and Parents

Beyond digital support, the program also provides families with in-person assistance. In individual or group sessions, children and adolescents are given space to express their thoughts, fears, and feelings—often through creative and playful methods. There is also room for lightheartedness, laughter, and the experience of positive community.

A special highlight is the extensive vacation program, which enables Tigerherz children to share carefree experiences together in a safe environment. In addition, Tigerherz offers counseling for parents with cancer, family members, as well as professionals and interested individuals. All services are free of charge.
