Prof. Dr. Fabian Bamberg Receives Scientific Award / Research on CT and MRI Imaging and the Use of Artificial Intelligence / The Goals Are Earlier Diagnoses and More Targeted Treatments

Prof. Dr. Fabian Bamberg, a member of the Faculty of Medicine – University of Freiburg and Medical Director of the Department of Radiology at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg, has been elected to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. The certificate was presented at the end of June. The Academy is thereby recognizing his research in modern medical imaging. His work helps detect cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and metabolic disorders earlier and treat patients in a more targeted manner.

“Being elected to the Leopoldina is a great honor and, at the same time, an incentive to further develop medical imaging toward more precise and personalized diagnostics,” says Bamberg. “Our goal is to further improve modern cross-sectional imaging techniques and gain even more actionable information so that we can better assess risks and plan therapies more precisely.”

“The election of Prof. Dr. Fabian Bamberg to the Leopoldina is an outstanding recognition of his scientific work and, at the same time, a strong signal for medical research in Freiburg,” says Prof. Dr. Lutz Hein, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine – University of Freiburg. “His research combines technological innovation with clinical benefit and demonstrates how modern imaging can improve patient care.”

Imaging for More Precise Medicine

Bamberg conducts research on non-invasive imaging, artificial intelligence in radiology, population-based imaging, and personalized medicine. One area of focus is the further development of computed tomography, or CT for short. This includes photon-counting CT. This technique directly detects X-ray photons. As a result, it can produce higher-resolution images while reducing radiation exposure. This can make diagnoses more reliable and facilitate follow-up care.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is another focus of his research. As part of the German National Cohort (NAKO), Bamberg oversees large-scale whole-body MRI examinations. These data help to better identify early signs of disease and risk factors in the general population.

Artificial Intelligence in Radiology

Another focus of Bamberg’s research is artificial intelligence in radiology. Machine learning methods can identify patterns in large image datasets. This allows for more accurate assessments of disease progression and enables treatments to be better tailored to individual patients.

The Leopoldina was founded in 1652 and is one of the oldest academies of sciences in the world. As the National Academy of Sciences, it advises policymakers and society on scientific issues. Election to membership is considered a high scientific honor.
