Light as a Central Motif
Dale was born in Liverpool, Canada, and has lived in Alsace for more than 40 years. The Franco-Canadian painter exhibits internationally and teaches at the Haute École des Arts du Rhin. His work has been honored with major awards, including the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Drawing (UK) and the title of Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (FR). His expressive landscape paintings depict light, nature, and vastness.
“In the context of psychiatry, these paintings take on an additional dimension. Precisely where mental crises can cloud consciousness and experience, Roger Dale’s art opens up a space in which light can be conceived of and experienced as a possibility: from darkness to clarity, from confinement to expansiveness, and from limitation to hope,” says Prof. Dr. Dr. Katharina Domschke, Medical Director of the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.
