The University of Freiburg's New Breast Center Opens Its Doors to the Public

Open House on October 7, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. / One-on-one consultations with experts / Medical center practices and university medicine to be integrated into a single structure in the future

An abnormal test result, a family history of breast cancer, or a diagnosis of breast cancer often raises many questions. Where can I get an appointment quickly? What tests should I get now? And who will guide me through the next steps? At the open house for the new University Breast Center in Freiburg on October 7, 2026, women and anyone interested can ask exactly these questions. Following an official opening ceremony at 4 p.m., the new facilities of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology will open to the public. From 4 to 7 p.m., visitors can meet the team, gain insights into diagnostics and treatment, and get personalized information.

“Changes in the breast, in particular, can quickly lead to worry and uncertainty. It’s important to us that women know who to turn to and that they receive comprehensive support from us—from the initial evaluation through follow-up care,” says Prof. Dr. Ingolf Juhasz-Böss, Medical Director of theDepartment of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg.

Short paths and dedicated points of contact

With the new facilities, outpatient care and university medicine are becoming even more closely integrated. The Medical Care Center (MVZ) operates like a regular private practice. At the same time, the specialized services of the Medical Center – University of Freiburg are directly available. Gynecology, radiology, the university outpatient clinic, and the MVZ coordinate diagnostics, treatment, and follow-up care together. For patients, this means fewer transitions between different points of contact, clearer processes, and closer support.

“Many women come to us feeling very uncertain. It helps when they know that here, the team is familiar with their case, the next steps are coordinated, and they don’t have to navigate different points of contact on their own,” says PD Dr. Stephanie Sauer, section head of Gynecological Radiology at the Department of Radiology.

Services include, among others, ultrasound, mammography with tomosynthesis, breast MRI, contrast-enhanced mammography, and targeted tissue biopsies. In tumor and genetic diagnostic boards, specialists from multiple disciplines collaborate to discuss further treatment. Reconstructive breast surgery, psycho-oncological support, and social counseling are also part of the University of Freiburg Breast Center.

The Breast Center was established in 2003 as the first certified breast center at a German university hospital. Since then, the range of care has been expanded step by step. Joint case conferences have become firmly established, and new imaging and tissue sampling procedures have been added. Genetic counseling, reconstructive surgery, and psycho-oncological support have also been expanded. Since 2024, the Freiburg Center for Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer has also been certified.
