Fugue meets string quartet
Scholarship holders of the Balthasar Neumann Academy play works by Mozart and Haydn as well as fugues by Bach, Scarlatti and Mendelssohn at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg
On Tuesday, June 28, 2016 at 4 pm, the string quartet of the Balthasar Neumann Academy invites you to a concert in the Heiliggeistkirche of the Medical Center - University of Freiburg (entrance surgery, Hugstetter Straße 55, Freiburg).
The program includes works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Josef Haydn as well as fugues by Johann Sebastian Bach, Alessandro Scarlatti and Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The performance will also be broadcast live to the hospital's patient rooms. The fugue has preoccupied composers of all eras and inspired a wide variety of elaborations: from strictly theoretical to humorous, from coolly thought-out to highly dramatic and emotional. In this moderated concert, the young artists explore the fascination of the fugue in all its facets and give a hearing not only to famous personalities but also to forgotten masters.
Founded and directed by Thomas Hengelbrock, the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble's Orchestra Academy scholarship program was launched in 2014. Outstanding young instrumentalists are supported in the academy for two years towards the end of their studies on their way into working life as independent musicians.
Admission is free. Donations for the Academy's work are welcome.
