Department of General and Visceral Surgery

Since October 1, Prof. Dr. Stefan Fichtner-Feigl has been the new Medical Director of the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Ulrich Hopt, who has retired. Prof. Fichtner-Feigl studied medicine in Würzburg and was most recently Deputy Director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Surgery at the University of Regensburg. His research focuses on the fields of experimental and translational tumor immunology and chronic rejection of foreign tissue following organ transplantation. "My goals for the Department of General and Visceral Surgery at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg are to intensify my personal dedication to patients, to guarantee their surgical treatment at the highest level and to expand scientific activity," says Prof. Fichtner-Feigl.

Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy

Prof. Dr. Claas Lahmann took up his post as the new Medical Director of the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg on October 1. He is the successor to Univ.-Prof. Dr. Michael Wirsching. Prof. Lahmann is a specialist in psychosomatic medicine and psychotherapy with the additional qualification of special pain therapy and was previously a senior physician at the Department of Psychosomatic Medicine and Psychotherapy at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich. His work and research focuses on the areas of body psychotherapy and occupational psychosomatics as well as somatoform disorders and somatopsychic disorders. "In the area of somatopsychic disorders, we are planning to set up a new psychosomatic day clinic specifically for physically ill patients in close proximity to somatic medicine in the near future. This is a pioneering and forward-looking model," says Prof. Lahmann.

Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy

As of December 1, Prof. Dr. Dr. Katharina Domschke, M.A. (USA) will head the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg as Medical Director. She succeeds Prof. Dr. Mathias Berger. Prof. Domschke studied medicine and psychology in Münster, Dublin and Boston. After completing her doctorate at the Universities of Münster and Maastricht, she habilitated at the University of Münster in 2008. In 2012, she took up a W2 professorship in psychiatry at the University Clinic for Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy in Würzburg, where she was most recently Deputy Clinic Director. Since this year, she has also been Adjunct Professor of Psychiatry at the Medical University of Vienna. Prof. Domschke has many years of clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of the entire spectrum of adult mental illnesses. Her particular focus is on depression, anxiety disorders, stress-associated disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorders. "The Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy in Freiburg has developed unique expertise in the psychotherapeutic treatment of all mental illnesses, which must be maintained and further developed at the highest international level and supplemented with other modern therapeutic methods in order to offer our patients the best possible treatment," says Prof. Domschke.
