(January 29, 2026) With 2,339 newborns in 2025, obstetrics in Freiburg is showing strong growth. Expectant parents benefit from medical safety, individual care, and a certified Level I perinatal center—even in cases of high-risk pregnancies and premature births.

More and more families are choosing to give birth at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg: with 2,339 newborns, the obstetrics department of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology reached a new high in 2025, recording 113 more births than in the previous year. While the number of births nationwide declined by 2.98 percent, the Medical Center – University of Freiburg bucked this trend and is now the hospital with the most newborns in southern Baden for the first time.

Medical safety and individual care for expectant parents

Leading role in the region

With the current birth figures, the Medical Center – University of Freiburg is once again the clinic with the highest number of births in Freiburg. A total of 2,339 children were born in 2,233 births. This puts the Medical Center – University of Freiburg in the top position in the South Baden region for the first time: no other obstetrics department in the region—not even the two other perinatal centers of the highest care level in Lörrach and Offenburg—had more newborns in 2025.

Medical expertise and individual support

The Department of Obstetrics and Perinatology at the Medical Center – University of Freiburg's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, together with the Neonatology and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at the Department of General Pediatrics, Adolescent Medicine and Neonatology, forms a certified Level I perinatal center. The focus is on the care of high-risk pregnancies and premature births, as well as family-oriented obstetrics for all expectant parents.
