CHAIR OF SELF-HELP RESEARCH
with a focus on cancer self-help
The Chair of Self-Help Research was established in October 2017 at the University of Freiburg Faculty of Medicine as an endowed professorship sponsored by German Cancer Aid (DKH). In organizational terms, it is classified as belonging to the Comprehensive Cancer Center Freiburg – CCCF. The specific thematic focus of the professorship is on “patient competence and cancer self-help.”
Organized self-help in general and cancer self-help in particular have experienced a very strong development in the past years. Today, self-help plays an important role in the public health system and has become established on account of its involvement in healthcare policymaking (e.g., certification systems) and scientific bodies (e.g., guidelines commissions). As a result, self-help is also increasingly confronted with tasks involving healthcare policy.
On the one hand, this means an increase in the status of and recognition for patient representatives, while on the other hand this development risks placing excessive demands on these persons. In this respect, cancer self-help is undergoing a change in its lay competency.
To date, only little research has been conducted in the area of cancer self-help. We have only few studies on the quality of structures, processes, and results in self-help – predominantly from the international context.
