The idea

"Laughter as good medicine" has been used successfully in America since 1985 and in Germany since 1994. There are now clown visits in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Austria, Switzerland and Germany (for example in Münster, Wiesbaden, Munich and Freiburg), mostly for children and young people.

The clowns

They call themselves clinic clowns or clown doctors and are not ordinary clowns, but specially trained professionals. They are friends, comforters and jokesters for the sick children. With great empathy, they improvise on the spur of the moment. The children have a very special relationship with them and tell them many things that they do not tell the doctors and nurses.

The project

The visits take place once a week on an ongoing basis. The clowns are out and about for around three hours and also "treat" the hospital staff as they pass by. At the beginning, the clowns receive a brief handover from the ward manager, they are informed about the condition of the young patients and know what to look out for that day. With the clowns' imaginative play, the illness can be forgotten and the will to live strengthened. Sometimes only soothing words and soap bubbles that float silently through the room can help. The creative play of the clowns is a useful complement to conventional medicine. The work of the clinic clowns is based on fundamental knowledge about the nature of human beings: The knowledge of the reciprocal influence of body and soul. Joy does you good!
