Top rating for digitalization at the University Medical Center Freiburg

According to the Federal Ministry of Health's DigitalRadar Hospital, the University Medical Center Freiburg is one of the top one percent of the most digitized hospitals in Germany / Optimized processes, higher IT security, greater patient involvement

The University Medical Center Freiburg is one of the pioneers in the digitalization of German hospitals. This is confirmed by the latest DigitalRadar Hospital survey, an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG), which systematically evaluates the digital progress of hospitals. According to the survey, the University Medical Center Freiburg is among the one percent of hospitals in Germany that are the most digitized. It was already among the top five percent in terms of digitalization in the first survey in 2021. Thanks to a clearly defined digitalization strategy, the University Medical Center Freiburg has now made further significant progress in the last three years and is now one of the absolute top German hospitals in terms of digitalization.

With a score of 67 (out of 100), the University Medical Center Freiburg is well ahead of the national average of 42. This means that the University Medical Center has set itself even further apart at a high level than in the 2021 comparison (Freiburg: 49, De: 33). A total of 1,592 hospitals were assessed.

"Our goal is to use digitalization in such a way that it creates tangible added value for patients and employees," says Dr. Michael Kraus, Chief Information Officer at the Center for Digitalization and Information Technology at the University Medical Center Freiburg. "Since the first survey, we have consistently pursued our digitalization strategy and are now pleased to see the positive results of our work."

Outstanding performance in key categories

With a variety of targeted measures, the hospital has made significant progress in key categories, including improving the quality of treatment and strengthening patient participation and IT security:

  • Optimized emergency care and discharge management
The PROOFED project enables the digital transmission of pre-hospital deployment documentation directly from the emergency services to the emergency department. This allows staff to prepare in good time. It also significantly improves processes in time-critical situations. A digital portal for discharge management has also been introduced, which facilitates communication with further treatment facilities such as rehabilitation clinics and ensures seamless aftercare.
  • Expanded patient participation
The "My University Hospital" patient app has been expanded to include functions such as digital appointment scheduling and the provision of treatment documents. Patients can now report concerns directly and organize appointments easily. At the same time, patient infotainment has been expanded so that information, service calls and entertainment are available directly at the patient's bedside.
  • Data-supported treatment
End-to-end digital treatment documentation forms the basis for quality assurance in real time at the University Medical Center Freiburg. Artificial intelligence methods are used for this. Integrated speech recognition gives the treating staff more time for their patients. The data integration center makes clinical data available for research, patient care and the development of new treatment methods.
  • Stronger IT security
The University Medical Center Freiburg has taken extensive measures to further improve IT security. Investments in new technologies, regular staff training and simulations of cyberattacks have significantly increased resilience to IT failures and help to protect sensitive data.

"The results of the DigitalRadar are confirmation of the commitment of everyone involved. They show that we have done our homework. The digitalization of the healthcare system is possible," says Prof. Dr. Frederik Wenz, Chief Medical Director of the University Medical Center Freiburg.

DigitalRadar Hospital: evaluation of digital progress

The DigitalRadar Hospital was initiated in May 2021 - as part of the Hospital Future Act (KHZG) - by the Federal Ministry of Health (BMG) to systematically record and evaluate the digital maturity level of German hospitals. The aim is to create transparency about the status of digital transformation and to support hospitals in implementing modern digitalization strategies.
