Strong families despite cancer
May 15 is International Family Day / Tigerherz supports children of parents with cancer in difficult times
Every year, International Family Day on May 15 focuses on the importance of family cohesion. For many families, this cohesion is particularly challenged when a serious illness such as cancer suddenly changes their lives. Children and young people in particular often experience the illness of a parent as a great burden. The "Tigerheart ... when parents have cancer" service at the Tumor Center Freiburg - CCCF of the Freiburg University Medical Center supports families in which the father or mother has cancer. The aim is to strengthen the entire family - with a special focus on the needs of the children.
"When a parent has cancer, it's a crisis for the whole family. In this situation, children need special attention, empathetic support - and places where they can simply be children. With Tigerherz, we offer this space," says Cornelia Schulz. The qualified psychologist and psycho-oncologist (DKG) is head of the Psychosocial Cancer Counseling Center, which also includes "Tigerherz ... wenn Eltern Krebs haben".
In individual or group sessions, children and young people are given space to express their thoughts, fears and feelings - often using creative and playful methods. There is also room for lightness, laughter and the experience of positive community.
A special highlight is the extensive vacation program, which enables the "Tigerherz" children to enjoy shared, carefree experiences in a protected environment. Tigerherz also offers advice for sick parents, relatives, professionals and interested parties. All services are free of charge.
