Cutaneous inflammation

Major Focus:
Chronic inflammatory skin diseases represent a major burden for modern health care systems. They affect up to 25% of the population ranging from young babies to elderly. Whereas highly efficient therapies are available for the most common diseases such as psoriasis and atopic eczema other disorders still remain undertreated. However, even highly efficient therapies leave a proportion of patients that do not achieve acceptable treatment outcomes. The pathogenesis of chronic inflammatory skin diseases is complex and defined by an interplay of genetic background, environmental influences and dysbalances in the immune system. These alterations lead to a miscommunication of immune cells with the epithelial compartment and thereby to a disruption of the epithelial barrier. The aim of our research group to decipher communication pathways in health and disease to allow better diagnosis and more efficient treatment of patients. Within this aim, we primarly focus on the understanding of the interaction of adaptive T cells with tissue resident cells such as keratinocytes and fibroblasts and how this interaction can lead to the maintenance of skin barrier integrity or to pathology.
