Hygiene and molecular laboratory

Hygiene Laboratory

The laboratory supports the Division of Infection Control in routine environmental monitoring (water, air, decontamination control) conducted by infection control staff in various departments of the university medical centre.

Main activities:

Routine environmental testing:
Monitoring of procedures for cleaning and processing of endoscopes, washer-disinfectors, water (dialysate, drinking water, bathing water) for pathogens (Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Legionella), and control of cleaning and disinfection procedures employed in the hospital kitchens.

In vitro susceptibility testing of reference stocks of nosocomial pathogens against antibiotics and other antimicrobial substances (MIC and synergism).

Our submission forms are available on request at iik.hmlabor@uniklinik-freiburg.de.

Molecular Laboratory

The laboratory's area of responsibility is the molecular epidemiology of nosocomial infectious agents and their antibiotic resistance genes. The laboratory supports clinical hospital hygiene in investigating suspected transmission events and outbreaks. Typing costs for external senders will be provided on request.

Our submission forms are available on request at iik.hmlabor@uniklinik-freiburg.de.

Main areas of work:

Research focuses on the supraregional spread of multi-resistant bacterial pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes, such as beta-lactamases, and their classification into genetically meaningful groups. Another area of interest is the genetic relationship between nosocomial infectious agents and bacterial populations in the environment outside hospitals.
