One hour of cutting-edge research: The power of images in radiation oncology

New lecture series with Freiburg members of the renowned Leopoldina - National Academy of Sciences / In-depth insights into top-class research and opportunity for discussion

Becoming a member is considered a kind of accolade for scientists: The Leopoldina - National Academy of Sciences is the world's oldest permanently existing academy of natural sciences. In the new lecture series "One hour of cutting-edge research" at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, Freiburg Leopoldina members report on their discoveries, their significance for medicine and beyond. The topics range from anxiety disorders to developments in forensic medicine and new therapeutic approaches to cancer. The series of events, which is supported by the Leopoldina, is aimed at an audience with a general interest in current research issues, scientists and students.

The event will be kicked off by Prof. Dr. Anca-L. Grosu, Medical Director of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg, will give a lecture on "The Power of Images in Radiation Oncology" on Wednesday, February 5, 2020 at 6:30 p.m. in the lecture hall of the Department of Radiation Oncology, Hugstetter Str. 55 in Freiburg. After the 40-minute lecture, there will be an opportunity for questions and discussions.

New imaging for high-precision radiation reduces side effects

Radiotherapists use imaging techniques to look inside people in order to carry out cancer treatment with surgical precision. "Thanks to rapid developments in imaging in radiology and nuclear medicine, radiotherapy has changed fundamentally in recent years. Today, the therapy is highly precise and has far fewer side effects than in the past," says Grosu, who played a key role in this development. "Artificial intelligence methods will provide additional data and thus pave the way for highly personalized radiotherapy. We are researching this at full speed," says Grosu. The Medical Director will talk about the developments of recent years and promising approaches in her presentation.

Prof. Dr. med. Anca-L. Grosu

Grosu studied medicine at the University of Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg) in Romania and then moved to Munich, where she worked at the Rechts der Isar Clinic of the Technical University of Munich from 1990 to 2006. After a research year at Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA, Grosu became Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the Medical Center - University of Freiburg in 2007. She was appointed to the Leopoldina in 2018 and has been Deputy Senator of the Leopoldina's Radiology Section since January 2020.

Leopoldina - National Academy of Sciences

Founded in 1652, the Leopoldina has around 1,600 members from all over the world, including seven scientists from the Medical Center - University of Freiburg. Its mission is to promote science through national and international cooperation and to provide science-based advice to the public and politicians. It has been under the patronage of the Federal President since 2008.
